How To Use Scripture Against Big Bangers

“Would you not say to yourself, some super-calculating intellect must have designed the properties of the carbon atom, otherwise the chance of my finding such an atom through the blind forces of nature would be utterly minuscule. A commonsense interpretation of the facts suggests that a super-intellect has monkeyed with physics, as well as chemistry and biology, and that there are no blind forces worth speaking about in nature. The number one calculus from the facts seem to me so overwhelming as to put this conclusion almost beyond question”
Fred Hoyle
Sir Fred Hoyle was an English astronomer who is best known for his controversial rejection of the “Big Bang” theory. It surprised me to learn while rejecting the hypothesis, the astronomer was also the guy who coined the term “Big Bang.”
He did it as a joke while on British radio; mocking the belief of an uncaused cause to start creation. Let’s not get too excited though; he was also the guy who supported panspermia, stating without it, the possibility of cell development would be like “a tornado sweeping through a junkyard might assemble a 747 from the materials therein.”
Hoyle’s fallacy endears him to Believers like us even when he cannot rise higher than a first-rate second-rate man because of his self-proclaimed atheism. The knighted astronomer was a paradox of beliefs. While doing my research for this post, I found him to be a likable guy.
Look into him for yourself and let me know, in the comments, what you discover.

Okay, forgive me for the long intro. Today we’re going to start with two beginnings:
1. The Big Bang, what is it?
2. God’s spoken word, how does it work?
Then we’ll get into a little Latin terminology. Don’t panic! It’s not going to be some scholarly diatribe that picks apart the grammatical syntax of how it’s used and what it means to us, I promise. Because I don’t even know that stuff myself.
After that, we’ll look at some verses from Hebrews and Genesis. From there, we’ll move into design: is it random or intentional? We’ll talk about fine-tuning and then more Scripture, this time from Isaiah.
We’re going to close with God’s glory, and as per our standard, a couple of questions we all need to answer, alright?
Here’s a look ahead:
Come on! Let’s get started.
Two Beginnings
There are many theories about how the world we live in came into existence; both scientific and religious. We’re only going to look at two: one scientific and one religious.
But for you guys who are curious about what else is out there, I list some of the better-known theories from each here. Science puts forth a cosmic inflation theory: the universe expanded in the blink of an eye.
The solar nebula theory uses deep time to posit a gas cloud’s implosion causing its dust to clump into planets. No, really, some people believe that! Isn’t that somethin? On the religious side, there’s panspermia.
Our friend, the Knight, Fred Hoyle, promoted this theory, which argued dust from meteoroids, asteroids, and comets carried the world’s building blocks, creating life on a preexistent earth.
We’re going to look at the Big Bang and God’s breath to answer the question, where are we?
Big Bang
Scholars credit Georges Lemaître, a Catholic priest and theoretical physicist—how about that combination—as the first to theorize a cataclysmic explosion caused the universe’s creation. I don’t know for sure, but I’m bettin’ he was a Jesuit. What about you?
I’ll tell you what, whoever is first to prove it in the comments below gets to choose a topic for an upcoming post they want me to write about. Sounds Good? Great! Let’s get back to this Big Bang thing.
The theory posits that the universe began 13.8 billion years ago—there’s that deep time thing again—from the tiniest, hottest, most dense thing, which explodes gushing out time, space, and matter that turns into subatomic particles, which came together to form atoms, that turned into stars, and then galaxies. How do you like them apples?
Does anyone else find it curious that no Big Bang theorists like Lemaître, Hubble, or that plagiarist, Einstein, asked where the tiny little thing came from, what caused it to explode, or why it took so long?
God’s Spoken Word
In God’s historical narrative about creation Moses records the phrase “and God said” or “then God said” ten times in Genesis chapter I (Gen 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24, 26, 28, 29).
“God said” results in the immediate manifestation of what He commands into existence.
In his second letter to Timothy, we find Paul telling Timothy all Scripture comes into existence through God’s breath, His words (2 Tim 3:16).
The Apostle tells his young protégé the Bible came about through God’s words, not through mankind’s hands.
God's exhalation carries His creative power into the world.
His speaking in Genesis is all it takes to create the universe.
His breath carries absolute authority over all He speaks into existence.
Yeah, it really is that simple!
Ex Nihilo
The difference between God’s creation narrative and everyone else’s story is He needed nothing to start from; material outside Himself.
God uses polar opposites to include all that’s contained between them (heaven and Earth) when explaining to us how He creates the universe.
The LORD’s creative action needs no preexisting material to draw from. His breath carries forth creation.
We, on the other hand, need resources like labor, materials, tools, equipment, and the know-how to complete the simplest project.
Even when we believe we’ve thought of everything required for a simple home project, we often find ourselves running back and forth to the store for things we didn’t expect to need.
All of us have been there, right? God could have published the Bill of Materials required to create the universe, but what good would it do?
Most of us can’t get through the seven chapters of His instructions on how to build the tabernacle (Exo 25-31).
God created everything from nothing, ex nihilo.
Hebrews 11:3
None of us were around during God’s creative work. Even if we were all there to witness it happening, there would always be that one guy who thinks to himself “Big deal, I could do that.”
You know the type, the “you should’ve asked me guy.”
It seems no matter what ya do—working on the car, building a shed, even goin on vacation—he’s the guy that knows a guy who could’ve done it better, faster, or cheaper, if only you’da asked him first.
This guy is a lot like Job in that way. He’s the “Where were you when the paper was blank” guy (Job 38:4-39:40).
Anyway, believers like us know better. We understand how God created the universe because He tells us how He made everything we see around us from things we don’t see; like His breath (Heb 11:3).
Genesis 1:2
Deceivers like to look at verse two of God’s creation narrative in Genesis and exclaim, “Ah—ha!”
Or like Yukon Cornelius, come-on, you gotta know him!? From Rudolph fame—after lifting his pickaxe out of the ice and licking its tip, he cries out, “Wahoooo!”
That’s what godless people do after reading about the formless void and its darkness over the deep, with God hovering over the whole thing.
Satan’s minions, while persistent, lack intelligence, which must be a constant source of frustration to him.
Ya see, their little brains cling to what they wish was true, preventing them from seeing the truth in verse one.
The little brain argues verse two shows pre-existent matter from which God creates the universe. No, really, that’s what they believe.
They’re just not able to understand that God created in verse one the universe and earth, what they believe pre-existed in verse two, poor things.
Can you see how blessed we are to have eyes that see?
Smoke em’ if ya’ gotta’ em’

The Home Stretch:
Random or Intentional
Big Bangers, (warlocks, witches, wizards) yeah, they’re back; they’re like the little brains we just talked about—persistent, just not very intelligent—that’s all. They hide behind spells like quantum mechanics and inflation theory, the latter of which we already covered.
They argue things like galaxies, the Earth, and us just happen to come together by chance. One of their own, Hoyle, you remember Fred, the tornado analogy guy, I like him, not so much for his science, but for his ability to mock it.
Fred coined another well-known analogy that refutes randomness with ease. It goes something like this, not an exact quote but close enough for us: Fred compared getting a functioning protein by chance combination of amino acids to a solar system full of blind men solving Rubik’s Cubes—remember those—simultaneously.
Dr. Stephen Meyer has many presentations available on YouTube, which pretty much eliminates any possibility of randomness in the universe. I’ll add a link at the end for ya.
Which brings us to our next topic.
Fine Tuning
Observing the results of God’s creative action in the world eliminates any random chance of the universe’s existence because of God’s creative precision and physical laws maintaining it.
We’re encroaching on intelligent design here, but there isn’t a way to talk about one without the other.
Ya see, to acknowledge fine tuning in the universe demands a fine tuner, unless you wanna circle back to randomness and attribute universal fine tuning to a tornado or a bunch of old guys playin’ with Rubik’s cubes, which is too ridiculous to entertain.
Another path we could walk along entails attempting to link universal precision to say…Bigfoot, somebody’s granny, or extraterrestrials, who seem to be taking credit for everything these days.
Like we already know, the plain and simple explanation for the order, complexity, and purpose behind the universe is God’s breath and will.
Isaiah 45:18
God’s not like us; He finishes what He starts. The LORD begins creation with us in mind; you and me, we’re not afterthoughts. We are His most treasured possessions.
Each one of us the same, not one more than another. He did not create an empty universe—without form—Genesis 1:2—God had us in mind the entire time, and still does at this very moment, and all moments to come.
The LORD calibrated the home He created for us by 10120 an incomprehensible number. Any deviation from it, one way or the other, means we never existed.
God didn’t create the universe and then pace back and forth in heaven wringing His hands, hoping some dirt and germs would somehow drop by and evolve into something He could work with.
Don’t believe what the evil doers say about us. We’re not insignificant clumps of cells flying, spiraling, catapulting through space without purpose or a future; we’re God’s special creation.
God’s Glory
God’s narrative, recorded by Moses in Genesis 1:1-31 depicts His supernatural omnipotence through creation of the universe using nothing to make something with His breath.
God speaks creation into existence. His breath creates the universe and all it contains in six 24-hour days followed by one 24-hour day of rest without detonating the tiniest preexistent thing over an indeterminate time-period (billions of years).
Some of us believe Him and follow His teaching, but warlocks, witches, and wizards (scientists) deceive the rest.
These peoples don’t understand God created the universe, and all in it for His glory alone, not theirs.
Why You?
God created the heavens and earth not to satisfy an unknown need of His, or because He is lonely, or even for us. God created the universe to glorify Himself, His power, wisdom, and love. This includes our future eternal life with Him in the new heaven and earth, where we—you and me—experience everlasting joy in God’s presence. It’s not about us, it’s about Him.
Why Wait?
Whenever, wherever we want, while living in opulent luxury or incarcerated in a dark, dank, solitary cell, all we need is Him.
God is always with us. We don’t even need a Bible, although it is the most comforting material possession we own.
We only need to want Him and God will reveal Himself to us. He is always with us, all of us, wherever we are, all the time.
What is it you are waiting for? This is different for all of us and tends to be very personal.
