Elder
Who Is An Elder?
Elders exemplify maturity and fulfill disciples’ needs much like a parent raises their child. “So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock” (1 Peter 5:1-3 ESV). They mentor all levels of discipleship and assume responsibility for their spiritual maturation. Elders help disciples grow in Christlikeness, both as individuals and as a group. They reproduce disciples by leading men toward God’s will for their lives. Elders equip disciples with faith, wisdom, courage, and strength to finish the race before them (2 Tim 4:7). Their biggest challenge is leaving behind those they have mentored to start a group of their own.
